Corey:  Welcome to CRi Solution’s monthly podcast. Today we’re talking Agile with Tom Schaeffer, CRi’s Agile Practice Director.

Tom, as I read up on various agile trends, I see frequent mention of “scaling agile”; this seems to be a really hot topic. What does “scaling agile” really mean?

Tom:  Scaling has a couple of contexts . . .

  • Delivery scaling: multiple Agile teams working on the same product
    • Many teams producing pieces of an overall solution and the delivery timing from each team requires tight coordination and alignment
    • This has also given rise to alternative agile frameworks to better plan and manage delivery quality, speed, and scale
  • Cultural scaling: Agile change throughout the organization
    • Scaling Agile beyond development; applying agile principles and practices to business-side functions
    • Marketing, sales, portfolio management HR, finance, strategy, etc.

Corey:  You mentioned alternative agile frameworks, are those things like SAFe? How many different agile process frameworks are there, and which ones are most commonly being used?

Tom:  Gartner’s 2017 Market Guide for Enterprise Agile Frameworks analyzed about a dozen different frameworks.

Recent data from Version One’s 12th Annual State of Agile report cited the top four most commonly used scaling frameworks are Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe), Scrum of Scrums, Disciplined Agile Delivery (DaD), and Large Scaled Scrum (LeSS).

Corey:  I thought Scrum of Scrums is part of Scrum?

Tom:  It is, it’s Scrum’s natural built-in scaling mechanism. It’s rightfully listed as a tactic to coordinate and align delivery across multiple teams.

Corey:  How do you help customers determine if moving to an Agile Scaling framework is the right decision?

Tom:  What I like to do is walk the customer through a four-step thought process:

  1. What’s the problem you’re trying to solve? If it relates to scrum, where is scrum falling short?
  2. Are you utilizing Scrum’s built-in scaling mechanism; Scrum of Scrums? If not – why not? How many teams does your Scrum of Scrums support?
  3. What’s your DevOps situation? If you’re unfamiliar with the term, DevOps is a set of practices that leverages IT operational infrastructure to automate some portion of the development lifecycle; integrations, builds, testing, and in some cases, delivery. Agile Scaling frameworks derive much of their lift from a mature DevOps capability to increase code quality and substantially accelerate flow.
  4. If you didn’t have any red flags on the previous questions; have mature scrum and devops practices, and eight or more teams working on one solution, then moving to an Enterprise Agile Framework is likely the right answer.
